Dear R.B.

Dear R.B is our take on a noir "thriller." We wanted to really go for a dramatic style, using harsh lights and experimenting with shadows and of course, being black and white.

The film is takes itself 100% seriously, although there is a lot of humor riddled throughout, making fun of the genre, or just being silly.

Dear R.B. takes place in the 1930's and follows a private investigator, Harvey Van. H, who is trying to find his one and only true love: "R.B." Throughout the film, Harvey follows clues to find his love.

This short film was created as a part of the "Love Notes" short film competition in Carson City, NV. The film had to be entirely written and conceived within two weeks, starting January 15th, 2025 and ending on January 29th, 2025.

Dear R.B.

Dear R.B. is (as the name implies) the main theme of the entire film. It is a dark jazz ballad of sorts. The track aims to create a very dark atmosphere to really set the tone of the rest of the film.

The track was almost entirely improvised with the exception being the bass and drums. Dylan, Cameron, and Luis recorded the entire track in two takes, playing along with a drum backing track.

Who's the Boss?

Who's The Boss is the music that plays right after the Mafia boss kills one of the mafia members.

This track was added to dramaticize the angry, candid, and menacing character that is "The Boss." The low strings create a dark atmosphere, while the high strings slowly bring in tension, causing anxiety. The music suddenly swells up as it transitions to the next scene.

Harvey's Comin'

Harvey's Comin' plays right as Harvey is interrogating one of the Mafia's goons. As Harvey learns more and more info, the music gets louder and more active.

The track brings in the low strings motif as Harvey learns about The Boss. As Harvey's anger builds, the music gets more intense, until he goes to save his love, where all stops are blown, with Harvey's motif playing on high strings above busy low strings and percussion, bright horn stabs breaking it all up.
